Mother-in-Law Lounge
The Mother-in-Law Lounge opened in 1994 when New Orleans legend Ernie K-Doe parlayed the name of his famous song into the lounge business on North Claiborne Avenue. He passed away in 2001, but his wife Antoinette kept his memory and the bar alive. Five of water from Katrina essentially shut the legendary lounge down, but then another Nola legend, Kermit Ruffins stepped in and brought it back to life in 2014. And as Kermit says, “You know we’ve been partyin’ ever since.”
Food: Kermit is famous for barbecue, but it’s not a traditional restaurant. It just depends what they’re cooking on the back patio or sidewalk grill. Often a plate of food is included
with your cover charge.
Where’s the name come from?
In 1961, New Orleans native Ernie K-Doe had a massive number-one hit with the single “Mother-in-Law.” The song was written by another New Orleans legend – Allen Toussaint.
