The Joy Theater was built in 1947 on Canal Street in downtown New Orleans. The venue was renovated in 2011 and it’s now an excellent venue for live music and can accommodate crowds up to 1,200 people. It had served as a traditional move theater until 2003 and then was inundated with the flood waters of Hurricane Katrina. The Hi-Ho Lounge, which opened in 1995, was known as a punk-rock dive bar for many years. After Hurricane Katrina, it was bought and significantly renovated by new owners John Hartsock and Lori Bernard. In 2013, it was sold again, this time to Brian Greiner and partners who owned the Maison restaurant and music venue on Frenchman Street. The venue closed on Halloween in 2024. Apple Barrel, which opened in 1981, is perhaps the tiniest music joint (maybe 50 people could jam in there) in New Orleans but it provides amazing local music seven nights a week. Recognized as one of the top small music venues in the city by Gambit New Orleans in 2025, the Apple Barrel is a no-cover spot most nights (one-drink minimum) and is always rockin’ late.
