History:

The Saenger Theater opened on February 4, 1927, as a 4,000-seat movie palace. Saenger Theatre on Canal Street was built by brothers Julian and Abe Saenger as a 4,000-seat "atmospheric" movie palace. Designed by architect Emile Weil to resemble a 15th-century Italian courtyard, it featured a starlit ceiling and cloud projections, serving as the crown jewel of their massive southern theater empire. After significant damage from Katrina, it underwent more than $50 million in renovations and reopened in 2013.
