Banks Street Bar
Updated: Jul 29
Banks Street Bar opened as a dive bar in 1959 and it has stayed true to its roots since then. It has always been a blue-collar neighborhood joint, but jumped into the music scene in the early 2000s – since then it’s been known as a gritty incubator of emerging New Orleans artists in a range of genres. It now (2026) hosts some of the best punk rock shows to be found in Nola. The bar now describes itself on Instagram as a “funky neighborhood watering hole featuring live music, open mic nights, karaoke, and more.”
They have also started a Songwriters Showcase event hosted by Chris Vincent on the last Tuesday of every month. Definitely worthwhile to check that out.
It's 21-plus only and it’s dog friendly while also featuring some outdoor tables.
There’s no food served at the bar but Bub’s Burgers are as good as it gets. Walk next door or use the connecting window. Mid-City Pizza is also right across the street and the bar has no issue with other outside food.
